Top 10 New Years Resolutions

The vast majority of people who make a new years resolution will make one concerning some area of fitness. It may be about exercise, nutrition, lower alcohol consumption, drinking more water, losing weight, etc. No doubt the top 10 new years resolutions contain quite a high number of health and fitness promises.

But how many of those Top 10 New Years Resolutions are actually kept? Only a very small percentage I would say. I got the idea for this article today at the gym. I run outside several times a week and go to the gym several times each week also on the treadmill. Yes, that is EACH week…meaning all 52 of them…almost anyway. Today is the second week into January and the gym was packed! It is always like this these first few weeks of the new year. But by the end of January things are getting back to normal there. About a month is all most people have the will power for I am sad to say. I am not here to give a lecture, but since the topic is Top 10 New Years Resolutions, let me get started with some fitness related resolutions.

Exercise –Whatever you choose to do, JUST DO IT. Make it a habit. Somehow, someway, make it a priority in your life. I can’t tell you the difference you will make for yourself if you will just get out there and DO SOMETHING on a regular basis. (How about getting a (stationary bike stand!) DO NOT make a new years resolution of exercising EVERY DAY! That is simply not practical or even healthy. Your body needs time to rest and rebuild. Besides, none of us can do it everyday. Something always comes up. 4 or 5 times per week is plenty to make one of your Top 10 New Years Resolutions for. Otherwise you are just setting yourself up for failure. Stop Smoking – Today at the gym, while I was pondering all the new people I saw working out, a guy came into the locker room. He had been SMOKING just before. He smelled awful! Besides the stench, why do people do that to themselves? Stopping smoking is probably one of the top Top 10 New Years Resolutions of all time. Yes, I know he was at least coming to work out. But still – STOP SMOKING!

Drop Some Weight -- Losing weight has probably been on more people’s list more times than any other of the Top 10 New Years Resolutions. But it probably is the most difficult one of all. Humans LOVE to eat! Period! It is in our genes…the need to STOCK UP for that rainy day. Losing weight is more about a lifestyle than will power. Change to a healthier life style and you will lose weight. Don’t worry about it; it will just happen. Exercise a little, read labels, don’t eat late, drink a lot of water, etc.

Eating Better – Here again, don’t promise the world to yourself with one of the Top 10 New Years Resolutions. Never say never! If your vice is a diet coke morning, noon and night, don’t say you will NEVER have another diet coke. It simply won’t work. You will fail and then be back to square one. Just try to limit, say, the evening coke for a while. Prove you can do it. Then try the noon one. Read about the effects of soft drinks.

These are some of the Top 10 New Years Resolutions for fitness and health. Be reasonable with yours and GOOD LUCK!
