• Starting and quitting an exercise program is extremely common. The first thing you must understand in order to overcome this common problem is that ALL humans are lazy by nature. People who start an exercise program and then quit don’t understand that even the best exercise program takes a lot of will power to continue. There is no “magical” exercise program which successful exercisers just happen to discover. People who exercise on a regular basis are simply better able to self-motivate. Instead of looking for the “best exercise program”, you instead should figure out what will motivate you enough to stick with the one you choose. • Your exercise program should be an ever changing work in progress. Simply deciding to walk 2 miles per day for the rest of the year won’t cut it. Not only are humans lazy by nature, we get bored easily too. It’s not what you do; it is that you DO SOMETHING. If you change up your routine a lot, you won’t get bored and quit. For example, if you are a walker, don’t walk the same course day after day, week after week; treat yourself to a new course sometime. Drive somewhere cool where you can see some new territory and get your workout in. The best exercise program should not be boring! Read about running races! • Pick a program which your body can handle. If you are very over weight, don’t decide you are going to start running for your new year’s resolution! Think Baby Steps! You did not get out of shape in a short amount of time and you will not get into great shape over night! The best exercise program will safely ease you into harder and harder workouts as your body adapts to increased expectations you place on it. • Your best exercise program should not injure you! Of course any type of exercise can cause an injury if you do too much too fast. It is said that more exercise injuries occur the first week of the new year than any other time. Can you guess why? Your exercise program should consist of a schedule which you STICK WITH no matter what unless you get injured. And there will be times when you have pulls and strains which you will need to let heal. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure in injury cases! Rest the injury for a day or two instead of hurting yourself worse by continuing to workout while injured! I have a page titled Running Injury you may be interested in. • Another aspect of the best exercise program for you is how accessible the exercise will be to you. If you commit yourself to joining a gym and working out 5 times a week, you will have to get to the gym! What if the gym is across town? What if you are having car troubles? Not only will you have to dedicate the time spent in the gym, you will have to dedicate the time spent going to the gym. Your best program may be one which is in or right around your home. Set up a stationary exercise bike in a spare bedroom and use it once or twice a week or when the weather is bad. Then plan to walk or jog around your block or even you own property if it is large enough (like we do!). • In summary, the best exercise program is one you will stick with. It really doesn’t matter what it is. As Nike says, “Just Do It!” Winter time have you down? Read about cold weather running. Best of Luck With Your Exercise Program!
